Rocky Reach Dam, Visitor Center & Gallery -
The Wenatchee Valley is blessed with natural resources including the Columbia River, which provides affordable and renewable hydroelectric power for the people who live here and for visitors. A day trip to the Rocky Reach Hydro Project is fun and informative. Self-guided tours of the powerhouse include historical exhibits in the Museum of the Columbia and displays that explain how the hydroelectric power is generated. There is also an opportunity to see the giant turbine-generators at work from a walkway high above the powerhouse floor. Colorful signs explain the PUD’s innovative fish bypass system which provides young salmon and steelhead a trip around the dam in a water-filled pipe nearly a mile long. Outdoors, there are 18 acres of landscaped grounds with shady spots for picnicking, sunny lawns and a children’s playground. The Rocky Reach Visitor Center is open daily, including weekends. For more information, call Debbie Gallaher at the Chelan County PUD at (509) 661-4960.
