Artist Paula Christen
Landscape watercolor artist, Paula Christen, looks to express the transformation that happens when we connect back to nature. “We are always finding the best in ourselves when we spend time in nature.” Looking at works created by Paula, you will find bold, interesting shapes and juicy color, but a chosen frugality in finishing touches. She believes that the best paintings are like a good conversation; each party adding their own comments to the discussion. Paula begins the visual story, but leaves room for details to be supplied by the viewer’s thoughts and memories.
Born in Whittier California, Paula spent early years enjoying the golden state’s sunshine and developing a persistent love of salt water rimmed with sandy beaches. Her father’s position with US Fish and Wildlife later involved moving the family to Washington State; living at both Leavenworth and Entiat National Fish Hatcheries. She loved the changing seasons and discovered skiing.
After graduating from high school in Entiat, Paula pursued art at Wenatchee Valley College and received her BA in Fine Art from Central Washington University. “Creating art is my passion. It gives me a joy I can’t put to words.” Pursuing an art degree was just the foundation to becoming an artist. Seeking out the best watercolor teachers, Paula continues honing her skills by attending workshops in the US and abroad. She now shares her knowledge with others by teaching watercolor.
Paula continues to connect people to nature by painting at her studio and living at the base of the Cascades. Winthrop, Washington has been her home since 1976.
